  • Swagger Jackin’ Aint Cool : Bow Wow Edition

In this culture that we all know and love there is a lot of music that is inspired by other artists & producers, directors, writers etc. It could be a certain lyric that brings on a train of thought, some visuals that spark some creativity, an article, a drum pattern/set of chords that get sampled, it’s all a  part of Hip Hop and music in general.

Some people use that inspiration well and use it to create something special but unfortunately there are some who don’t do it so well. Ultimately though it’s part of creating music and something that’s happened forever and something that will continue to happen.

Whilst there are those that respect the importance of creativity and the need for individuality there are also individuals who are so bereft of any creativity that they have to resort to straight swagger jackin’ someone else’s concept.

Here’s what looks like a classic example and unfortunately it’s not just anyone being accused here, it’s an artist who’s been in the game for years who’s part of one the hottest cliques in Hip Hop today,  Bow Wow.

The tracks and video’s in question are below, time to hit play.

Below is a video for North London’s Thai Matic for his track ‘Goin Down’ (See its upload date on Youtube, July 29th 2009)

and here is Bow Wow’s video for his track called, wait for it…. “It’s Goin Down’ uploaded June 3rd 2011

Someone help me out here, am I trippin’ or did I just hear the same song and see the same video twice?

Get at me in the comments with your opinion’s on this and always remember, swagger jackin’ aint cool.

      What are you talking about?
Thaimatic bought stock footage and stuck it in his video, lil bow wow bought the same stock footage and put it in his video.
Thats what happens when you dont film stuff yourself, other people can use it.

    2. HG, June 3, 2011:

      True.

But why would Bow Wow need to buy stock footage of a lambo promo when he has one? Would it not make sense to shoot lambo scenes with his car?

And the non stock footage concept is way too close. Don’t be a ding bat, mate

    3. HG, June 3, 2011:

Was Thai Matic’s song name also stock? Too close… Once more, don’t be a ding bat

    4. wrighty, June 3, 2011:

using stock footage… and the edits are so close it hurts like at the same poins the same footage is used… its a shame, it just shows wat people want to look at… if u aint spent money or got someone to shoot it… its not a video in my books

    5. admin, June 4, 2011:

      Same track title too?

    6. Professor_B, June 4, 2011:

… it’s dissaponting, but on the other hand ‘Impersination is the best form of Flattery’.

    7. Studio Deez, June 4, 2011:

Using stock footage is a real cop-out on both sides.

    8. Bobby Generik, June 4, 2011:

Regardless of whether both of them used stock footage or not, Bow Wow still copied other aspects of the video. For instance, the scenes with him in it shows him in black and white rockin the big sunglasses, JUST like in thai’s video. Also, the beat is similar, the name is similar and its just a rip off in general.

    9. Jamal, June 4, 2011:

Na i think semtex is tryna cause some controversy to raise Thai Matics profile.

Its lamborghini footage which is accessable to anyone, its shot in black in white so it only makes sense that the videos are too. The songs do have a same name but sound nothing alike. Nice try though.

    10. Jamal, June 4, 2011:

      *& white

    11. Meme, June 4, 2011:

Come on…what are the odds of someone using the exact same stock footage and calling the song the same thing?

    12. Meme, June 4, 2011:

Play the videos at the same time some of the edits are EXACTLY the same timings and fades…the chances that Bow Wow’s vid was made without having seen Thai’s with those similarities are lower than me winning tonights lotto

    13. joe king, June 4, 2011:

what and thai’s video concept was original??

      both boring videos… NEXT.

and if its stock footage then its like me complaining if someone is using the same futura font in their website as i do in mine.

    14. Mon, June 4, 2011:

It’s ironic that it was directed by a guy named Rico Da Crook LOL. They both used clips from the Lambourgini Gallardo LP 560 4 advert >>> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zq6KenKlRJg, which I think shows a lack of creativity coming from both artists. In terms of the title “It’s going down/ going down” is soo generic, and was probably decided before the video was even made. No offence to Thai Matic but I seriously doubt that Bow Wow sat down after seeing that video and wanted to copy it verbatim… it’s not that great tbh. That is not to say that in the Bow Wow “It’s going down” video editing process, when probably researching how the advert had been used in other music videos, elements of Thai Matic video was just done in Bow Wow’s video in exactly the same way. Neither song or video is outstanding, this could have been avoided if BOTH artists had been original

    15. Meme, June 4, 2011:

Thai’s concept was more original than Bow wow’s that’s a fact!

    16. N.Dot, June 4, 2011:

neither concept was original. this is like holding up 2 fake purses and comparing them.

      same old shit,

    17. Anderson, June 4, 2011:

Bow wow needs to come up with more creative lyrics and concepts/flows and stop copying others. His new music isn’t good. I feel his trying to do the wacka/lilwayne flow but its not him. So dry!
      Swagger jackin aint cool.

    18. Dale, June 4, 2011:

Swagger jacking is the new original. Either you like something or you dont?

    19. admin, June 4, 2011:

The entire culture is built on Swagger jacking.

No idea is original, everything is recycled from previous trends, eras, other genres, etc.

      Its what we do!

    20. AJ, June 4, 2011:
