A conversation that took place the other day:
Alleged hardcore rapper: Semtex man you need to play some harder HipHop in your set.
Me: Cool, like what?
Alleged hardcore rapper: play some Soulja Boy.
Me: I did, I played 2 of his joints.
Alleged hardcore rapper: Oh.
Dont get me wrong the kid in question is a total donut, and this was a truly bizarre conversation. However, this is the beautiful thing about HipHop, its all things to all people. I love the fact that within the Spectrum of HipHop there are so many different styles, and I rep all of them on my show, in the clubs, on tour, etc.
I used to get dissed for playing playing Crunk, Grime, etc. I got a lot of abuse on message boards because I openly backed Dizzee in the beginning, now he’s the no.1 MC in the UK, truly independent. I was the first to play Day N Nite, and my producer at the time laughed at me for playing it., and so on. At the same time i’m the only DJ to host a 3 hour show dedicated to Ice Cube, i’m the only DJ to host a HipHop show that examined the dynamic between HipHop and Obama’s rise to power, I can go on.
I’ve had every influential rapper on my show [apart from Dr Dre, and trust me im working on it] Old school, new school, West Coast, East Coast, Dirty South, UK, African, etc.
My shit is tight. I dont even respond to haters anymore. There’s no need. They are not worthy a response.
Hip-Hop is evolving by the second, there’s a new generation of artists that have kicked down the door and changed the rules. Whether you like them or not, this next wave of artists are going bring in a next generation of HipHop fans who will sustain and support the culture for the next 20 years. Whether you like it or not, to the majority of kids across the world, Soulja boy is the truth right now.
In the UK through artists like Chipmunk, Tinchy Stryder, and N-Dubz dominating the airwaves, hosting sell out tours, selling albums, changing the business models, making their own indelible influence on UK Pop Culture, and lord forbid actually focussing on making hit records, the scene is only going to get bigger.
Your favourite UK artist is going to benefit from all of this. For the first time ever, the HipHop industry in the UK is growing in front of our very eyes.
This is actually the first time that U.S artists need a UK act to help their project move units out here. Change is good, accept it.
I wanted N-Dubz on my show because I fully respect them for their craft, the graft they’ve put in over the years, their work ethic, and the fact that they are the future.
To the majority of kids in the UK, N-Dubz are more significant than any other US artist, and their stats say it all [do your research].
Chipmunk, Tinchy, DJ Ironik, N-Dubz, and Dizzee Rascal have all had a good year. Next year they’re going to continue smashing it, but it’s also going to be about Wiley, Sway, Devlin, Tinie Tempah, Giggs, etc.
For the first time ever, it feels like the equilibrium of US vs UK is tipped more in the UK’s favour. Deep right?
For all you fuck boy retards that dont understand this post.
For all you alleged pussy’ole djs that have never actually played in a club before but think you have the right to an opinion.
For all you ‘keep it real’, chin stroking ass wipes that don’t actually buy music but talk shit. You know, the kind that raved about how real the Raekwon album is but didnt actually buy it……
I’ve just done a 3 hour set on stage. Please feel free to lick the sweat from my balls at your earliest convenience, or go suck yourself.

Semtex, your a mint DJ, agree with everything your saying.
haha that was a rant an a half, you made solid points though. you know whats what, and you keep doing it, like bringing marvel for the electric proms, ect ect ect……. best DJ by far
gwan fam!
Semtex man you don’t even need to rant , your a fore-figure in the game and a well respected dj. ive seen your sets countless times and again with dizzee and each time you kill it. Haters will hate man but the people who are on the same wave length as you understand your workings . . just keep doing your thing man. and yea you need a hook up with dre still lol.
best dj in the game right here
LOL … Well played sir.
Im glad I read this post today, because it’s exactly on the subject of what I was talking about last night, although my views are slightly different to yours Semtex. As a DJ you need to play whats current and not necessarily what your feelin’ yourself in order to appeal to a wide range of listeners which is cool. But the current state of hip hop and what kids growing up on current ‘hip hop’ today or what they beileve is hip hop is really sad, how can someone say play some ‘hardcore hip hop’ then mention Soulja Boy! I sky+ the BET hip hop awards and the vast marjority I ended up fast forwarding because it is absolute dross, these acts today have nothing to say at all, they can’t ryhme, they talk no sense, acts like Soulja Boy, Gucci Mane, The New Boyz, Durroh (I may have some of those names wrong!) even in the UK acts like Chipmunk and Tinchy Stryder, all I keep hearing is their doing their thing, fair enough they’ve been succesful this year and that’s cool but they have done it by releasing what is essentially drivvle, pop music aimed at young teens, you mention Devlin in your post and to me he is one of the best young UK hip hop artists I’ve heard in a while but in order to ‘make it’ these days you have to compromise and sell your soul.
Going back to the hip hop awards, Cube picked up some sort of lifetime achievement award and in his speech he mentioned that acts today shouldnt bow down to radio and video stations into releasing what they think they want to hear, and he also said to older rappers keep doin’ what you do because as long as you have a voice you have something to rap about. All of which is true but unfortunatley time has changed and hip hop as it was will never return.
There are still some great acts out there doing their thing, and I understand that nothing lasts forver and everything moves on and develops but what I can not get over is the type of average music that the majority of people now see as acceptable as top draw music today. I know that a lot of people reading this will not share the same view which is cool becasue the game is all about opinions and I thought I would just vent mine.
Semtex keep doing your thing man, I first heard of you on from the Sony street team mixtapes that I still have on casstte today and thought were dope!!
Hear what your saying, and agree with some of it. Youve got to remember though, to this next generation of Kids, Tinchy is thst guy, Chipmunk is that guy!
Ive got a 9 year old nephew, he thinks Eminem, and Jay-z is boring but to him, N-Dubz and Tinchy are the truth. No doubt his taste in music will grow, but right now the entry points for new HipHop fans are more varied than ever before.
Yeah I do agree with you when I was a kid my tastes grew from the like of MC Hammer and Kriss Kross who were commerical artists (showing my age!!lol) into the likes of Ice Cube then East coast artists like Redman, Das Efx, Biggie, Jay, Nas,etc, etc. I’m glad seeing the culture I love to death grow and be more accessible, remember the controversy it caused when it first broke through, but I think with acts like Soulja Boy,etc have taken a turn for the worse, commerically anyway, like I said many great acts are out there, just have to look a little harder.
You liked MC Hammer???? lol
Seriously though, isnt Soulja Boy the modern day equivalent?
lol Yeah I said it and what, when your a kid you don’t know any different do you!!lol notice you didnt question the Kris Kross!!lol and of course Soulja Boy is a modern day equivalent but when your older you look at it from a different perspective.
